In the Salento province there are towns (Grecìa salentina) where a dialect of Greek origin is spoken. It is called “grecanico” or “griko”. This is the most famous song of the grecanic area and is a clear example of the formation of folklore culture. The author (Vito Domenico Palumbo 1856-1918) composed a serenade of eight verses, from which the three given below have been taken, probably referring to a musical model already known. The song was spread and adapted to various areas (we have gathered three musical versions) and the performers rarely know who the author is because they consider it passed down through oral tradition.
